My heart has been falling in love with drawing all over again. My sister turned me onto an amazing art changing book Betty Edwards 4th edition DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN. This book is for anyone out there. It is even intended for those of you who have said it “I can’t draw to save my life. I couldn’t even draw a straight line with a ruler.”. This book is for every level from beginner to intermediate people( people who don’t consider themselves real artists : )), to experienced artists. Let’s say if you are living and breathing and you are looking for a way to open your heart and your eyes to the world this is the book for you! I am roughly 1/4 of the way into this book, in a matter of a week I have been finding myself obsessing about it in a good way. I have been looking at everything in a new way.

A little back history on my drawing abilities. After my second child was born I couldn’t find any art for his nursery. During one of my many hours spent nursing him I found myself staring at one of his blankets. I had looked at that blanket hundreds of times but in that moment I had and epiphany. Those characters needed to be on his wall. So with no trained art experience other than high school art courses. I went to the local art supply and bought two small canvases and gather leftover house paint and borrowed some paint brushes from my sister and I got to work. I laid the blanket on the floor besides my canvases, I looked at each character and I painted exactly what I saw. And now those paintings are hung in my third son’s room. They then morphed into a children’s book series I created, and am working at getting them into the world. All of this came from nowhere a whim of my heart. I continued to get inspired from other art and would draw what I see, or draw what I was feeling. I have created endless illustrations. When I open my portfolio books, sometimes I find myself amazed that I was the one who made those pictures. Plus my children love, love when I bring my books out.

I am to the point where I need a little more and I have a feeling this book is going to give it to me. I invite you to join my journey to tapping deeper into my brain to see what it is capable of. What I have read so far has been eye opening. For instance, I don’t think I ever really looked at someone’s face in the right way. Even the mountains I have looked at them over and over in my 32 years and last weekend when my family was on a bicycling adventure and I saw ever crack, every dark spot, every shadow, every reflection of white beaming off of the already breathtaking mountain sides. I could actually feel the beauty of them.

With that said the first exercise was to draw a person from memory, the second was to draw a self portrait (I have never drew a portrait before three days ago). The third was to draw your hand. Here they are!



The person from memory was my husband, he looks real cartoony as how I have been drawing for the last four years. For the self portrait you are supposed to take your paper and add a few under and tape it to your drawing board. And situate a mirror so you can see your entire face one arms length or 2 feet from you while you draw yourself. I will say it was rather intimidating drawing myself. I am usually full of smiles, but when I am concentrating they are gone. The third drawing was to draw your opposite hand. Me being right handed I drew my left I was in right brain mode. I struggled with my hand big time. Hands have been a weakness for a long time. But I got through the 45 minute session. The whole point of this exercise is to see where my starting point is. The book depicts self portraits of adults drawing at a 6 and 7 aged drawing levels. It is crazy to know our minds will literally cut off whenever we stopped drawing last. So if you gave up in middle school . Then your portrait will look exactly that of a teenager. After seeing others before and after portraits I was hooked. The depictions of the 6 and 7 year old portraits and after a grueling 40 hour art class the results are astounding. This book is a breakdown of the class.

The beginning of this book taps into using the right side of your brain vs letting your left side take over. Some key differences between our right and left hemispheres of our brains : The right side or hemisphere of our brain controls of left hand. It is the playful side, the curvy side, the side that twists and turns it is complex. The left side or hemisphere controls our right hand it is sensible, it is direct, it is true, it has hard edges, it is forceful, upright, fanciful. 90% of us are right handed. Back in the day being left handed was considered bad, it was weird, it was different. In those times my parents forced my older sister to right handedness so she wouldn’t struggle. It was to help her. I am sure at the time being they had their reasons. It is so strange to me to change what you naturally are, even worse change what your child was born.

This is a microscopic blurb of the last 60 pages I have rapidly been absorbing. I am excited to tap into my right side. I am already seeing different. On my own last night I attempted to draw a portrait of my six year old, I broke down her face, instead of being intimidated by the entire image I stared at each feature and covered up others and really looked at her face as a puzzle instead of a hole and here’s what a little over an hour brought me.

It is not too shabby if you ask me, plus she was so excited to see it when I finished. The look on her face was the best.

And just because some of us didn’t get a college degree doesn’t mean we can’t be real artists. We can teach ourselves with the help of amazing resources. Hello Friends!

Today I wanted to share the things that bring me happiness everyday. And something I have heard at least three times in the last couple of weeks is staying true to my heart. In this case pertaining to my writing. If I don’t feel it deep down, it will never have meaning and without true meaning I can not help people.

With that said I am going to be focusing on things from my heart. Some days are filled with things I used to let hinder me, I decided a few months back to change my train of thought. I flipped and turn my stressors into happy times. Of course I am a human and I have my moments but it has been working wonders in my home. So here is a list of things that are true to my heart, bringing me happiness everyday.

Waking up at 5am, to a dark and quiet house

Writing, drawing, reading in a quiet house. Staying true to my heart and feelings of the day.

Getting my sweat on and moving my body. I have been hooked on these Youtube workouts lately they are called Blender Fitness and have been getting me into shape big time! I feel so much more alive after I work out and in return I feel happier too!

Hearing feet coming down the stairs, and sleepy children rubbing their eyes not quite ready to be awake. Since mom is awake they must too. And it’s ok!

Morning and night-time snuggles and kisses are always a favorite.

Water and lots and lots of it!

Reading children’s books to myself even better to my children and watching their little expressions.

Writing for any reason, freeing my mind and my soul.

Learning how to write better!(Fire, fire, flicker light, fire burning throughout the night!)

Chocolate in the afternoon, even better. Evening tea drinks and chocolate bars with my love, Rex. Sitting next to him holding hands. Getting butterflies when he makes me feel complete. Brushing his hair off of his forehead with my fingers. Butterfly moments!

Studying and researching. It is funny all of the time I was in school I pretty much hated it. Now I find myself loving to study. I love reading and learning new things. I sometimes test myself to make sure I remember what I have read. My brain is an amazing sponge these days. I am so grateful for this!

Writing on this blog, there is something freeing about it. I feel I can be myself without fear of judgment. I love being able to write whatever is on my mind.

Shopping with three children, three five gallon water jugs to fill and a cart full of groceries. My super mom moment. Jack on my front pack. June and Milo filling up the first two jugs and me power lifting each full judge into the cart with a 28LB boy on my front. That deserves a golden star if you ask me! Quite the wonder woman moment. This was yesterday and I succeeded the job with lots of patients. I returned home and did not forget one thing from my list. Yes I even impressed myself. I am pretty sure I gave myself a mental high-five.

I could keep this list going for another three pages but I am sure you are catching my drift. Let us all turn our not so happy moments into happy moments. Enjoy what we have and work at making it better. Lots and lots of love to each and every one of you who take the time to read my blog and giving me a happy adrenaline rush. A high of self-worth that I am doing this. I am living my life, I am being my best self, I am writing despite rejections. I am taking advice and rewriting. I am not giving up, I have even more of a reason to strive to be better because I have courage and love in my heart. I know I can do it day by day. And so can you. Challenge yourself today and for the rest of this month. When you feel you are going to lose your mind at an uncomfortable or unexpected situation. Stop take a breath maybe even smile and look at it from a different perspective. An don’t forget to listen to your heart, don’t ever ignore what lies within you. With all of my love.
